Graphic design and logos
Use AI to explore concepts fast, then turn the best direction into clean, usable vector artwork and a brand system.
- 1Use AI for breadth: many concepts quickly, then narrow with criteria.
- 2Final logos need clean vector artwork that works small, in one colour and at any size.
- 3Check that a mark is distinctive and doesn't resemble existing trademarks.
- 4Build a simple brand system (colours, type, spacing) and reuse it in every prompt.
01Where AI helps
AI is a superb sketching partner. The final, production-ready mark usually still needs a designer's hand in a vector tool.
- Brainstorming names, concepts and visual metaphors.
- Generating many logo and layout directions to react to.
- Producing social graphics, posters and mock-ups in a consistent style.
- Writing taglines, layout copy and design rationale.
- Critiquing designs for hierarchy, legibility and contrast.
02The workflow
The Creative AI path covers image prompting in depth; this guide is about the design process around it.
- Write a brief: the business, audience, values, competitors, where the logo will appear.
- Brainstorm concepts in words before generating images.
- Generate many rough directions; shortlist three against the brief.
- Redraw or vectorise the chosen direction and refine it by hand.
- Test it: tiny sizes, one colour, dark and light backgrounds, on real mock-ups.
- Document the brand system and use it for every future asset.
03Tools to reach for
Image models output pixels. Logos need vectors, so plan for a tracing or redrawing step.
- Image models known for rendering text accurately, for logo and poster concepts.
- Design platforms with built-in AI for layouts, resizing and brand kits.
- Vector editors (some with AI vectorising or generative fill) for final artwork.
- Chat assistants for briefs, names, copy and critique of uploaded drafts.
04Prompt: concepts before pixels
Words are cheaper than images. Explore ideas first.
05Prompt: generating logo directions
Ask for flat, simple artwork that will survive vectorising.
06Prompt: on-brand assets
Paste the same brand block into every asset prompt for consistency.
07Pitfalls
Distinctiveness, legibility and legal safety matter more than novelty.
- Look-alike marks: generated logos can resemble existing brands. Search for similar marks and consider a trademark check before you commit.
- Unusable files: a raster image is not a logo. Get clean vectors and the right file formats.
- Garbled text: verify every letter in generated typography.
- Ownership: check each tool's terms, and be aware that in many places purely AI-generated work may have limited copyright protection.
